3-30-22   THOUGHTS

In the latter parts of the book of Job, God gets to Job”s problem and to the problem of all mankind.   Job 34:5-6   "For Job has said, ‘I am righteous, But God has taken away my right; 6  Should I lie concerning my right? My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.”  The young Elihu seems to speak correctly.  God picks up the conversation in chapter 38, and continues the line of reasoning.  Job 38:4  "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?   With a series of questions, God breaks Job down to nothing, in order to restore him.

Job 34:1-15   Then Elihu continued and said,  2  "Hear my words, you wise men, And listen to me, you who know. 3  "For the ear tests words As the palate tastes food. 4  "Let us choose for ourselves what is right; Let us know among ourselves what is good. 5  "For Job has said, ‘I am righteous, But God has taken away my right; 6  Should I lie concerning my right? My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.’ 7  "What man is like Job, Who drinks up derision [scoffing, scorn] l like water, 8  Who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, And walks with wicked men?  9  "For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing When he is pleased with God.’ 10   "Therefore, listen to me, you men of understanding. Far be it from God to do wickedness, And from the Almighty to do wrong. 11  "For He pays a man according to his work, And makes him find it according to his way. 12  "Surely, God will not act wickedly, And the Almighty will not pervert justice. 13  "Who gave Him authority over the earth? And who has laid on Him the whole world? 14  "If He should determine to do so, If He should gather to Himself His spirit and His breath, 15  All flesh would perish together, And man would return to dust.
Job 37:1-5   "At this also my heart trembles, And leaps from its place. 2  "Listen closely to the thunder of His voice, And the rumbling that goes out from His mouth. 3  "Under the whole heaven He lets it loose, And His lightning to the ends of the earth. 4  "After it, a voice roars; He thunders with His majestic voice, And He does not restrain the lightnings when His voice is heard. 5  "God thunders with His voice wondrously, Doing great things which we cannot comprehend.
God begins to talk to Job in chapter 38.  The young Elihu seems to have spoken rightly.
Job 38:1-11  Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said, 2  "Who is this that darkens counsel By words without knowledge? 3  "Now gird up your loins like a man, And I will ask you, and you instruct Me! 4  "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding, 5  Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the line on it? 6  "On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone, 7  When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy? 8  "Or who enclosed the sea with doors When, bursting forth, it went out from the womb; 9  When I made a cloud its garment And thick darkness its swaddling band, 10  And I placed boundaries on it And set a bolt and doors, 11  And I said, ‘Thus far you shall come, but no farther; And here shall your proud waves stop’?

My Prayer:
O Lord, help us always to ponder your awesome nature.  Help us to defeat ourselves as we see your awesome being!  May we rejoice,   that you alone are God, and that You love us.  In Jesus name,    Amen.
